DAMA strives to provide quality arts instruction to those who have the least access. Art curriculum is developed for all skill levels understanding that, for some participants, art could become all or part of their career.
DAMA also understands that art is an intimate way of connecting to self and others and that community connection and mental wellness are equally valuable outcomes during our collaborative process – to which quality materials are an integral part.
Equally important is DAMA staff's safety and production equipment. To make massive, public art a reality, industrial equipment and cutting edge technology is required. With these tools, we are able to elevate community youth voices to an epic scale!
The Pumpkinseed fish is a tiny reminder of beauty in the unexpected and overlooked. Wisconsin waterways are home to over 160 fish species ranging from the smallest Darter to the giant old Lake Sturgeon. The Pumpkinseed is one that many of us recognize, it is a common catch for first-time fishermen and is fixed in the memories of many who grew up enjoying the abundant lakes of the midwest. “Small Pond” is a mural celebrating the natural beauty of this palm-sized native pan-fish. The small fish cannot be overlooked when rendered on this unexpected scale; the shapes and colors of nature are portrayed for us to marvel at with fresh eyes. We must wonder - what other natural beauty is just waiting to be noticed?
This stylized Pumpkinseed fish mural was designed by DAMA artist Amy Zaremba and painted with Madison’s Northside youth and families at “Increase the Peace” events at Warner park over the spring of 2019. This DAMA mural was a collaborative project produced by many hands and intended to inspire creativity and contemplation. The mural measures 8 x 15 feet and is painted with exterior grade house paint on Polytab fabric panels that DAMA artists can permanently install onto a variety of surfaces using acrylic gloss gel medium.
Sometimes we all need to remember to take our time and appreciate the moments that seem to fly by in our busy lives. This snail mural is an exercise in acknowledging the little things that we should slow down to appreciate. The mural was designed by DAMA artist Alicia Rheal and painted with the students at Memorial Quest and with various groups of students at the Lussier Center. DAMA artists asked the students, interns, volunteers, and general community to finish the statement: “Slow down and….”. We received close to 100 replies, most of which are written in the background behind the snail.
“Slow Down and…” measures roughly 8 x 15 feet and is painted with exterior grade house paint on Polytab fabric panels that DAMA artists can permanently install onto a variety of surfaces using acrylic gloss gel medium.
There is a special challenge in painting something familiar and iconic. Students at the Goodman Center/Seed to Table program tackled Madison icons with this mural of the Capitol building flanked by two of its famous statues. This mural gave students a brief glimpse into the history of public art on the capital square and a chance to reexamine the familiar.
The golden statue on the right is “Wisconsin” created by Daniel Chester French to sit atop the capitol building. She holds a globe with an eagle and her helmet is topped by a badger. The bronze statute on the left is “Forward”; she was originally created by Jean Miner in
1893 as a symbol of the suffrage movement.
“Capitol” measures roughly 5 x 8 feet and is painted with exterior grade house paint on Polytab fabric panels that DAMA artists can permanently install onto a variety of surfaces using acrylic gloss gel medium. A larger version of this mural was painted by students at LaFollette High School.

Give a student the opportunity to participate in 5 days of programming at one of our partner schools in Dane County. We will work on design, painting techniques, and understanding the value of community-created, public art.
The Lussier Family Heritage Center, a Dane County Parks facility, is a multi-use, educational and interpretive facility serving a diverse population that provides opportunities for youth and adult learning, volunteerism, outdoor recreation and special events.
Over the past two years, the Lussier Family Heritage Center has begun increasing outdoor and environmental education programming. Each program strives to create a safe space for people of all ages to explore natural resources through hands-on learning. A main goal of the programming is to introduce youth to local Dane County Parks with positive outdoor experiences. Some activities include outdoor exploration, habitat and wildlife identification, sustainability, pollution and runoff, environmental processes, and exposure to recreation opportunities (i.e. snowshoeing, biking, disc golf).
The education program at the Lussier Family Heritage Center focuses on connecting and educating our community on the importance of the natural resources in Dane County and beyond. Dane County is incredibly unique due to the geology and landscape carved by glaciers or left untouched. The county is home to 69 named lakes and ponds, over 475 miles of streams and rivers, and more than 52,000 acres of wetlands. Through workshops, experiences, hands-on trainings, and programs the Lussier Family Heritage Center hopes to connect our community with these vital natural resources.
Give up to 15 students the opportunity to participate in quality arts programming at one of our partner schools in Dane County. We work together on various aspects of mural art making and create stunning pieces that instill a sense of pride and ownership in youth and staff alike.
Offer a program to one of our partner community centers. With your generous donation we will co-design a mural with community members and paint it alongside participants of all ages. Your donation will cover materials, DAMA’s community art educators, coordination and implementation of the program. You are invited to paint with us when you choose to support DAMA in this way!
These were designed by DAMA, painted by communities and finished in our professional shop. They were painted with exterior-grade latex paint on “polytab” material, which installs like wallpaper indoors or outdoors. The mural comes as is or glued onto boards for easy installation on any wall.

The process of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly is an incredible wonder in nature. The possibility of metamorphosis holds hopes and drives dreams. This mural was designed to provoke conversation about the possibilities that the future holds for the young people who painted it with us. “Metamorphosis” was designed by DAMA artist Alicia Rheal and painted with students from SAIL West. While working on the mural we asked students to share with us what they would like to become and what they needed to do to get there. Lots of futures were planned over this mural.
“Metamorphosis” measures roughly 8 x 15 feet and is painted with exterior grade house paint on Polytab fabric panels that DAMA artists can permanently install onto a variety of surfaces using acrylic gloss gel medium
This work was done at one of our partner schools as a part of our unique curriculum. Students at the SAlL program at West High School used a variety of techniques including collage to create these masterpieces. Many students claimed that they are “not an artist” – DAMA’s job is to show youth that they can be anything. Being brave with art is just the beginning.
